We had an opportunity to catch up with Chef Sarah and she shared some really interesting insights about how she became a chef and what fuels her food passion.
Why did you choose to become a chef?
“Food is my passion and I know I wouldn’t enjoy doing anything else. Food brings people together and is a center for many conversations and social gathering. “
How long have you been a chef?
“I have been a cooking for 20 years and a chef since 2012.”
How have your past experiences defined your culinary style?
“I grew up in Southern California and there is a lot of Mexican food and influence there. My family always cooked southern food like fried chicken, greens and sweet potato pie. My experience in the military gave me 2 years of Korean cuisine in South Korea. I am learning to incorporate all those flavors and cooking styles that infuse my African-Korean heritage with the Latin flavors I fell in love with as a kid.”
What is your current culinary point of view and why?
“I believe that food should be looked at as energy, as fuel for your body. You get out what you put in. I want people to be more conscience of what they put into their bodies and how their food source affects the environment and the global impact on different levels.”
What do you want your customers to most remember after eating your cuisine?
“I want my customers to remember the experience. I want them to enjoy my food while the whole time exploring the flavor explosion that is going on. I want people to remember my food and how it made them feel when they were eating it.”
What bought you to Orlando and what do you like most about being a chef here?
“I relocated to Orlando from Seattle to be closer to our family. I like that there is a lot of different cultures that I can learn from here. I love Jamaican and Cuban food. All flavor profiles that I can incorporate into my current cuisine.”
What’s your favorite ingredient to work with and why?
“My favorite ingredient to work with would have to be vegetables. Vegetables are a vessel that can steer any dish into a good direction. They are healthy for you and offer such great presentation and overall complete the dish.”
Are there other chefs that inspire you? Who and why?
“Chef Edward Lee is my favorite chef. I love how he uses his culture and experiences to transform a new cuisine out of the simple ingredients that life has to offer.”
If it’s your last meal on earth what would it be?
“Samgyupsal with warm sake and kimchi.”
What interests you most about joining the EnjoyFresh network?
“I love the concept of EnjoyFresh and that it offers a healthy alternative to lunch besides a drive thru. I love how local chefs get noticed for their creative dishes while being creatively free with their menu. I love how EnjoyFresh is a networking opportunity for all parties involved.”
